Unilateral uterine torsion secondary to an inflammatory endometrial polyp in the bitch

Abstract: A 9-year-old bitch was presented because of lethargy and abdominal distension. Abdominal ultrasound revealed an enlarged, fluid-filled uterus and associated mass. Subsequent exploratory laparotomy revealed unilateral uterine torsion involving the mass. Recovery following ovariohysterectomy was uneventful and the histopathological diagnosis was of a benign endometrial inflammatory polyp. Reports of uterine torsion in the English-language literature are reviewed to identify factors associated with the incidence … Show more

“…The present case suggests that in sheep, the unbalanced uterine content of one horn predisposes to horn torsion. In this case, it is suggested that the pyometra, having an inertial force, after rotational movements can generate a torsion over itself, which in our case led to left uterine horn torsion, similar to litter‐bearing species cases with uterine disease (Chambers, Laksito, Long, & Yates, ; Johnston, Kustritz, & Olson, ).…”

“…The first case report and clinical review this month describes unilateral uterine torsion secondary to an inflammatory endometrial polyp. 1 It includes the diagnostic investigation and surgical management of a non-gravid Golden Retriever bitch that was presented with abdominal distension and sanguineous vaginal discharge. The paper includes clear images of the ultrasound, gross appearance of the uterine mass and its cut surface, and light micrographs of the mass.…”
