Unique catanionic vesicles as a potential “Nano-Taxi” for drug delivery systems. In vitro and in vivo biocompatibility evaluation

Abstract: We evaluatein vitroandin vivotoxicity and stability in an acidic environment of new vesicles formed by the catanionic surfactant AOT-BHD in order to investigate their potential application as an oral drug delivery system.

“…Taking into account our previous characterization of BHD-AOT vesicles and, to use them as drug delivery agents, they were evaluated under different pH conditions. [64] The diameter values of the BHD-AOT vesicles determined by DLS at different times at low pHs values (pH ≤ 2) to simulate stomach like conditions show that the vesicles are stable during about 90 minutes, after that, the size value decreases sharply to almost half of the original size. Moreover, during the first 90 minutes of exposition, the polydispersity reminds almost constant and then increases abruptly.…”

“…In the case of mixture of cationic and anionic surfactant (catanionic mixture [CAM]), electrostatic interactions between head groups decrease the free energy; as a result, catanionic vesicles are formed 3 . Vesicles are microscopic spherical bilayer structure similar to plasma membrane 4 . The head group region is predominantly solvated, and polarity gradually decreases from hydrophilic head to bilayer center that is hydrophobic.…”

“…18,19 Recently, the potential of catanionic system has been evaluated for drug-delivery and related applications. 8,15,20 However, their candidature for sustained release of fertilizers has never been explored. Keeping in view the benefits associated with the use of catanionic mixture as a delivery system, the present work intends to investigate the potential of pseudo-zwitterionic system based on equimolar sodium dodecyl sulfate and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HTAB) for sustained-urea release.…”
