Unique HLA antigen frequencies in the Finnish population

Abstract: The Finnish Bone Marrow Donor Registry was established 1992 to serve Finnish patients in urgent need of bone marrow transplantation. This study details the HLA antigen frequencies, including those of the A 19 subtypes, in the Finnish population. Large regional variations were found in antigen frequencies between the different geographical areas of Finland. In particular, antigens A9, B12, B35, Cw4 and DR3 display regional frequency deviations, but B7, B8 and B15 also exhibit regional variations. The present po… Show more

“…The [A2,Cw1,B56,DR4,DQ8] haplotype is relatively rare in Finland, whereas the susceptibility haplotypes [B8,DR3], [B62,DR4] and [B39,DR4] are more common also in the general population. 5,6,45 Maternal age of 35 years or above is known to increase BW 32 as well as the risk of developing T1D in the offspring. 46 The proportion of parturients aged 35 years or above has increased over time and is now 19.0% in Finland.…”

“…HLA data of the patients was obtained from the Finnish Liver Transplantation Registry and these HLA frequencies were compared to those demonstrated in the Finnish bone marrow donor registry [25]. HLA-A, -B, and -DR typing of the liver transplant recipients and Finnish bone marrow donors was performed using a complement dependent lymphocytotoxicity test on peripheral lymphocytes [25].…”
