On the Optimum Design of Magnetic Drum Store

An exhaustive review on the design of magnetic drum store has been made in the light of the investigation carried out by the author on this topic. It is attempted to develop the existing ideas with respect to possibilities and limitations of magnetic drum store and on how far the design can be optimized for different types of computer. A technical discussion on the choice of coating material, coating thickness, magnetic head design and aerodynamic effects at high speed has been made. A very brief description of a new track switching circuit using a magnetic gat\;1g transformer, designed to operate with a high speed serial drum memory, has also been included.
