Abstract

The aim of this study is to compare the living conditions and professional future concerns of university students in the 2010-2011 and 2019-2020 academic years. For the purposes of the present study as designed upon a qualitative approach, the study group consisted of 15 students, who participated in the research in 2010-2011 academic year and 29 students, who participated in 2019-2020. Research data were collected using a questionnaire developed by the researcher. Data were analyzed by descriptive analysis method. It was seen in the study that the majority of the students preferred the student homes for accommodation in both academic years and the major sources of income were family support, scholarship, and education credits, yet, students' income was not sufficient to cover their expenses in both academic years. It was observed that in both educational years, the major expense items were accommodation and transportation, where the least was spent on such items as social, cultural and sports activities, and that the order of priority of educational expenses declined during the 2019-2020 academic year. It was concluded that the rate of students attending to private preparatory institutions (dershane) or courses in their off-university time increased during the 2019-2020 academic year. In terms of university opportunities, there was a significant decrease in students' use of the library and participation in interviews, conferences, panel-like activities in 2019-2020, whereas there was a significant increase in the rate of utilization of such facilities as sports hall, computer laboratory, and club/association activities. With regard to the students' professional future concerns, it was concluded that a majority of the students, who participated in the research in both academic years, wanted to work in the public sector after graduation and that a great majority of the participants were concerned about finding a job after graduation.
