Unmet supportive care needs and its relation to quality of life among adult acute leukaemia patients in China: a cross-sectional study

Abstract: Background: Patients with acute leukaemia (AL) usually require prolonged periods of hospitalisation. The treatment and clinical symptoms may lead to patients' supportive care needs (SCNs) not being met and impairs their quality of life (QoL). Studies on QoL and SCNs among AL patients are limited. This study aimed to identify the unmet SCNs and its relation to QoL of adult AL patients in China. Methods: This multicentre cross-sectional study recruited 346 participants to complete a self-developed questionnaire,… Show more

“…The Palestinian advanced cancer patients reported significantly higher unmet needs than those observed in earlier studies conducted elsewhere, which ranged between 40 and 72% [ 18 , 19 , 21 , 45 ], compared with 96.8% in this study. The highest prevalence was observed in the physical/daily living and psychological domains (58.9 and 58.8% respectively).…”

“…For example, in most Western countries psychological needs were identified as needs that frequently went unmet among cancer patients [ 18 ]. In Asian countries, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean studies found that the common unmet needs were due to a lack of information provided by those working in the health system [ 19 , 20 ]. In Arab countries, Nair et al [ 21 ], in a study conducted in the United Arab Emirates, reported psychological needs were the most frequently unmet need.…”

“…The relationship between the QoL and supportive care needs of patients with cancer has recently been recognized [ 46 , 47 ], and a reduced QoL may be associated with psychological disorders or recurrence [ 48 , 49 ]. In our study, there was a strong, independent and inverse association between the global health status/overall QoL score with overall needs, and the QoL score was a significant predictor of need in many domains, including physical, psychological, health system and information and financial needs.…”

“…Health system and informational needs have been reported as key issues for patients with cancer in various studies [35][36][37][38][39][40][41], including the German validation study of the SCNS-SF34 [23]. In this study, the decision to choose information needs as the primary outcome related to the problem of uncertainty in the decision-making process.…”
