Unmyelinated Nerve Fiber Analysis of the Human Oculomotor Nerve

Abstract: Summary: Unmyelinated nerve fibers of the oculomotor nerve have occasionally been observed in experimental animals with the use of electron microscopes, but no details concerning normal oculomotor nerves in humans have been published. We measured and analyzed unmyelinated nerve fibers in the human oculomotor nerve with an image analyzer and a computer, using a new staining method, the Luxol fast blue-periodic acid-Schiff-hematoxylin (LPH) discriminative staining method which is the only one suitable for morpho… Show more

“…Several morphological, physiological, biochemical and ophthalmological studies have been conducted to investigate age‐related changes on visual system (Koicheva and Zlateva, 1980; Toshida et al., 1993; Pratt et al., 1997; Sun et al., 1997; Munoz et al., 1998; Kawamura et al., 2000; Chen et al., 2003; Oguro et al., 2004). Koicheva and Zlateva (1980) reported the decrease on visual functions (fine distinguishing details, colour and relief) while Sun et al.…”

“…The shrinkage ratios during the preparation of histology sections amounted to 10 + 0% in length according to our researches2-4, [6][7][8]11,12,[15][16][17][18][19][20][21].…”

“…Up to now, however, no staining method was available for unmyelinated nerve fibers, except for transmission electron microscopy. Reports on the evaluation of nerve fibers1-21) are rather limited in numbers except for our contri-butions2-4, [6][7][8]11,12,[15][16][17][18][19][20][21].The purpose of this paper is to introduce two discriminative staining methods with discussion on the modifications required in order to differentiate the various types of nerve fibers described above. These methods not only differentiate various nerve fibers, but also produce good results from the view point of morphometry.…”

An analysis of unmyelinated nerve fibers in the human oculomotor nerve was conducted using the new methods mentioned above 61 . The authors studied the numbers and transverse areas of unmyelinated fibers of the oculomotor nerve in 20 cadavers.…”
