Unobtrusive Monitoring of Sleep Cycles: A Technical Review

Abstract: Polysomnography is the gold-standard method for measuring sleep but is inconvenient and limited to a laboratory or a hospital setting. As a result, the vast majority of patients do not receive a proper diagnosis. In an attempt to solve this issue, sleep experts are continually looking for unobtrusive and affordable alternatives that can provide longitudinal sleep tracking. “…Wearables have the potential to provide continuous, objective, and non-invasive monitoring of a patient's physiological parameters. Moreover, the validity of the measures taken by the wearables have been studied regarding steps taken [4], heart rate [5] or sleep quality [6]. Combined, this type of technology can aid in the early detection and management of chronic diseases, improving the overall health outcomes of patients.…”

“…Sensory observations have helped care-focused medical staff focus on areas that require more detailed attention, confirm their medical assessments, and detect patterns of decline not usually detected during regular office visits. A complete technical review for sleep cycle monitoring is conducted by the same authors afterward in Siyanbade et al (40).…”
