Although definitions have varied, a carer is now widely regarded as someone who provides unpaid care or support to a member (a friend or family member) of their own household, of other households or of the community who due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction cannot cope without their support (Carers Trust, 2015; International Labour Organisation, 2018).
