Unprecedented Urbanisation in Asia and Its Impacts on the Environment

Abstract: Asia is home to almost half of the global urban population and is urbanising at a pace faster than any other region, leading to greater environmental challenges that are already serious. This article offers a balanced assessment on the relationship between urbanisation and the environment from the Asian perspective. It concludes that urbanisation is a cause of, but more importantly, a solution to environmental degradation. Policy-makers should take an optimistic and proactive, rather than conservative, approac… Show more

“…Urbanization is considered as a main indicator of regional economic development due to its positive effect on promoting industrial development, but many regions, especially developing countries, have trouble of its negative effect-the aggravation of environmental pollution (Wan and Wang [7]). The relationship between economic development and environmental pollution has been analyzed by early representative works such as Grossman and Krueger [8,9] and Panayotou [10], which similarly proposed the Environmental Kuznets Curve (i.e., the EKC theory).…”

“…Geographical CA is a commonly used model in simulating urban land development [56,57] and comprises four basic parameters: cells, state, neighborhood, and transformation rules. The state of each cell at time t + 1 is decided by the state of the cell itself and its surroundings and the transformation rules at time t. This can be expressed by Equation (6).…”

“…The urban-rural spatial structure, a regional reflection of humans' social, economic, and cultural activities under specific circumstances, illustrates the spatial dichotomy between urban and rural areas. In addition, with the rapid development of urbanization, urban sprawl has brought great challenges to urban and rural eco-environments [6][7][8], especially in China [9,10]. How to protect and maintain ecosystem security during the process of urban growth, to resolve the contradiction between This study offers two contributions to knowledge: (1) This study attempts to construct an integrated simulation model to simulate urban-rural spatial structures; and (2) this study offers an analysis of Harbin's urban-rural spatial structure on a regional scale from an ecological perspective.…”
