Unravelling the benefits of transition-metal-co-doping in lanthanide upconversion nanoparticles

Abstract: In this review we provide an overview of the current knowledge on lanthanide upconversion materials co-doped with transition metals. We focus on how the co-dopants affect the host lattice and the energy transfer processes.

“…iv) Doping effect Heteroatoms doping is a common method to change the chemical properties and intrinsic structure of MoS 2 cathode to enhance its electrochemical performances, which is an advisable modification strategy according to previous reports. [82][83][84][85][86][87][88] Heteroatoms doping have been widely employed in energy storage, and it can effectively improve the electronic conductivity, enlarge the interlayer spacing, and enhance the hydrophilicity of the active material. [89] Particularly, nitrogendoped is normally used to boost electron transport, shorten ion insertion/extraction pathways, and decrease ion diffusion energy barrier, [90] and it has been studied to improve the electrochemical properties of MoS 2 cathode in aqueous ZIBs.…”

“…Lanthanide‐doped is a classic strategy for constructing upconversion materials. [ 83 ] Yan and co‐workers synthesized ytterbium(III)‐ and erbium(III)‐doped porphyrinic MOF ( MOF 3 , Figure 5c) as an upconversion PS. [ 84 ] The energy was transferred from the upconversion nanocore to the MOF shell at NIR irradiation, producing a significant amount of ROS, accompanied by the release of hypoxia‐responding chemotherapy prodrug tirapazamine.…”

“…9,10 It has been proposed that the codoping of transition metals successfully improves the up-conversion performance. 11,12 Thus, the transition metal molybdate may play a vital role to enhance the emission arising from rare earth ions. The substitution of tungstate with molybdate can be a good choice since they have an equivalent ionic charge and comparable ionic radius.…”
