Unusual marginal-marine lithofacies from the Upper Devonian Catskill clastic wedge

Abstract: Upper Devonian marginal-marine deposits exposed at Ashcraft Quarry, northernmost Pennsylvania, are unusual in that they contain limestone in addition to the sandstone and shale which is prevalent in the Catskill clastic wedge. A 3 m. thick lower unit is a lateral-accretion deposit, composed mainly of planar and cross-stratified sandstones with subordinate wavy-flaser bedding. Erosion surfaces beneath sandstones are overlain by intraformational breccias containing transported crinoid, brachiopod, bivalve and pl… Show more

“…Except for Bridge and Droser's (1985) study of an Upper Devonian marginal-marine trace assemblage in northeast Pennsylvania, trace fossils from cratonic, offshore facies in west ern Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Kentucky have received the most attention (Szmuc, 1970;Gutschick and Lamborn, 1975;Szmuc et al, 1976;Feldmann et al, 1978;Hannibal and Feldmann, 1983;Weidner and Feldmann, 1985;Jordan, 1985). “…The shell fragments are not orientated, and comprise articulated and disarticulated valves (some closed in life position) in a matrix of black shale. Although this facies may not be typical of an estuarine succession (Bridge and Droser, 1985), the presence of the coquinite solely in the southern part of the basin is significant and further adds emphasis to a marine interpretation. The presence of disarticulated and articulated mollusc shells, suggests transportation from a nearby source (Jeffery and Aigner, 1982;Johnson, 1960).…”
