Unveiling the bioactivity of Allium triquetrum L. lipophilic fractions: chemical characterization and in vitro antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus

Abstract: Allium triquetrum L. bulbs, flowers and leaves are proved to be valuable sources of value-added lipophilic compounds, specifically as antibacterial agents against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

“…Innovation in BioPolymer-based Functional Materials and Bioactive Compounds, from the Portuguese associate laboratory CICECO–Aveiro Institute of Materials [ 41 ] at the University of Aveiro in Portugal. Among other research topics [ 42 , 43 , 44 , 45 ], this interdisciplinary group exercises research activities devoted to the use of renewable feedstocks for the extraction of high-value compounds from agroforest and industrial by-products [ 39 , 40 , 46 ], the valorisation of vegetable oils for the production of monomers and polymers [ 47 , 48 , 49 , 50 , 51 ], the design of biobased polyesters [ 52 , 53 , 54 , 55 ], and, in particular, the development of a panoply of natural polysaccharide- and protein-based materials [ 6 , 56 , 57 , 58 , 59 , 60 , 61 , 62 ].…”

“…This last author reported the antibacterial effect of octacosanoic acid evenly, a saturated fatty acid which is identified in this study. The synergic effect of different compounds contained in these extracts is eventually evoked by analysing the MICs obtained in this study mainly against B. cereus and E. coli , a hypothesis that is always put forward in such studies [ 69 , 79 ].…”

“…Based on the GC-MS analysis and our previous work, a total intensity chromatogram image of SAVEP is shown in Figure 1 . Referring to the quantitative method of GC-MS experiment conducted by Rabah [ 23 ], we chose the relative quantitative method to quantify the detected polyphenols. Our study showed a total of 703 peaks in the sample.…”
