UPb LA-(MC)-ICP-MS dating of rutile: New reference materials and applications to sedimentary provenance

Abstract: In response to the general lack of sufficiently abundant and high quality rutile U-Pb reference materials for in situ geochronology, we have characterised two new potential rutile ~ 1.8 Ga reference materials (Sugluk-4 and PCA-S207) from granulite facies belts of the Canadian Shield, namely the northern Cape Smith Belt of Quebec and the Snowbird Tectonic Zone (Sasatchewan). Characterisation includes ID-TIMS and LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating, imaging, and trace element analysis. We compare these materials with existing… Show more

“…U-Pb dates from single detrital zircons represent high-T igneous and metamorphic events in the source regions, while rutile, a medium-T chronometer, tracks mainly the time of cooling through ∼500 • C (Bracciali et al, 2013). The two chronometers applied to the same sample provide key complementary information about the thermal events in the source region.…”

“…Relative probability plots and frequency diagrams of zircon and rutile single grain U-Pb data are plotted in the range 0-150 and 0-50 Ma, respectively, and in the 0-2.5 and 0-0.8 Ga range. Percentages: number of grains younger than 150 and 50 Ma as compared to n, the total number of individual ablations after rejection of discordant zircon datapoints (Supplemental Table S2) and common Pb correction of discordant rutile datapoints (as described in Bracciali et al, 2013;Supplemental Table S4). Concordia diagrams are in Supplemental Fig.…”

“…Previous studies on in situ cassiterite U-Pb dating so far published have all been carried out using LA-MC-ICP-MS. In addition to cassiterite, other U-bearing accessory phases such as zircon (Machado and Simonetti, 2002), baddeleyite, monazite, titanite (Simonetti et al, 2006), and rutile (Bracciali et al, 2013) Pb ratios. As discussed above, the Tera-Wasserburg concordia diagram is the best way to obtain U-Pb ages for minerals with high common Pb.…”
