Upconverting nanoparticle to quantum dot FRET for homogeneous double-nano biosensors

Abstract: The unique photophysical properties of upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) and semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) render them an attractive donor–acceptor combination for near-infrared (NIR) excited FRET-based optical biosensing.

“…The availability of nanoparticles doped with luminescent lanthanide ions or complexes on one hand and of up-converting nanoparticles (UCNPs) on the other hand is presently adding new dimensions to this area of research by expanding it to NIR-NIR imaging, drug delivery and photodynamic therapy of cancer. It is noteworthy that sophisticated multiplex analyses or imaging experiments may require combining two classes of luminophores, e.g. in some FRET experiments, QDs can function as donors[18] or acceptors[19] for LLBs In this review, we attempt to give a broad overview of the applications of lanthanide optical probes in bioanalysis and bioimaging. Main current applications of lanthanides in biology and medicine are in magnetic lanthanide ions are used in radioactive treatment of cancer and they are known to have anticoagulant and antimicrobial properties, but the corresponding uses remain minor.…”

“…Recently there are quite a number of research reports on FRET between SCC and organic dye molecules, also between two dye molecules and few extensively studied about light emitting proteins [11][12][13][14][15]. There are several reports about the variation in the radiative decay rate of the dye molecules in the presence of MNPs.…”

“…Among other important molecules detectable by QD-based FRET belong vitamins such as ascorbic acid(Huang et al 2014), cobalamin(Gore et al 2014;Vaishnavi and Renganathan 2013)and /or biotin(Mattsson et al 2015) also amino acids(Heger et al 2015;Tirado-Guizar et al 2014), glutathione) and adenosine triphosphate(Chen et al 2008;Revesz et al 2007). Finally, substances that may cause pollution are numerous, some of them are directly connected to human activities, such as agriculture, and/or mining industry, and therefore monitoring is required.…”
