Update on endoscopic management of lingual thyroglossal duct cysts

Abstract: Although rare, LTGDC frequently present as a prominent tongue base mass with the potential of life-threatening airway obstruction. Herein we described the typical presentation, workup, and ideal surgical approach of these lesions. Complete surgical extirpation can be performed successfully with endoscopic techniques and minimal risk of complication or recurrence.

“…The overall distribution of TGDC in the present study was similar to that documented by others, with approximately three quarters of cysts positioned in an infrahyoid location [3, 8-11, 13, 15, 22, 24]. TGDC can rarely occur in the tongue, mediastinum, or larynx [3,4,26]. Although not emphasized in prior large series, TGDC may also arise within the substance of the thyroid gland, as evidenced by the eleven cases of intrathyroidal TGDC observed in the current study.…”

“…Work up may include computed tomography scan, magnetic resonance imaging, lateral neck x-ray, and barium esaphogram. Thyroid nuclear imaging and thyroid function test can help rule out ectopic thyroid tissue [2,3,9].…”

“…The TGDC, on the other hand, is a common cause of a congenital neck mass in the pediatric age group [9]. Thyroglossal duct cysts can arise anywhere from foramen cecum in the tongue to the suprasternal region [10,11].…”
