Update on the Commissioning of the Low-Energy Demonstration Accelerator (Leda) Radio-Frequency Quadrupole (Rfq)

Abstract: Initial commissioning of a 6.7-MeV 100-mA RFQ is underway. The RFQ is part of LEDA, the H + injector for the Accelerator Production of Tritium (APT) project. To benchmark the RFQ performance, beam physics experiments will be done with low and high current beams for both pulsed and cw beam operation. Commissioning efforts thus far have been limited to low-current pulsedbeam LEDA operation. Measurements to fully characterize the RFQ will ultimately include the dependence of RFQ beam transmission on RFQ vane volt… Show more

“…With output energy of 6.7 MeV the LEDA RFQ [1,8] is the highest energy and highest power RFQ in the world [3,5,[9][10][11]. The beam power is 670 kW when operated with the design-value 100-mA CW proton beam, making it the second-most powerful linear accelerator (after the LANSCE 800-MeV linac).…”

“…Up to now, there are many RFQs which have been designed for high duty or CW operation, for example, the LEDA RFQ [3], SNS RFQ [4] and so on. In Injector II of the China ADS, the RFQ frequency is 162.5 MHz and it accelerates protons from 35 keV to 2.1 MeV.…”
