Updated Camera Spatial Frequency Response for ISO 12233

Abstract: The edge-based Spatial Frequency Response (e-SFR) method is well established and has been included in the ISO 12233 standard since the first version in 2000. A new 4 th edition of the standard is proceeding, with additions and changes that are intended to broaden its application and improve reliability. We report on results for advanced edge-fitting which, although reported before, was not previously included in the standard. The application of the e-SFR method to a range of edge-feature angles is enhanced by … Show more

“…This latest standard will come with many improvements to the ISO12233 to increase the and precision of the measured e-SFR. Once released, these advances in the ISO12233 [10] would benefit future revisions of the NS-SFR and system e-SFR estimation methodology. Such advantages would include the following:…”

“…Matlab analysis source code is listed in a new Annex M. The details of these improvements are reported in a companion paper presented at this conference. 22 Another significant addition in the 4 th edition of ISO 12233 is an informative annex which describes how to compute an acutance value from either the e-SFR or the s-SFR data. This provides a "single number" resolution metric which can be correlated with perceived sharpness.…”

“…To suppress the effect of noise on the measured results, A Hamming Window for smoothing the sampling signal is proposed in the third edition of ISO 12233 slanted-edge method published in 2017 [4]. A Tukey Window may be used to further enhance the smoothing effect in the fourth edition of the ISO 12233 slanted-edge method, which is being drafted [5][6]. However, there is still no better solution for reducing the effect of image sharpening but using a sampling efficiency [4][5][6][7][8][9] to express the magnitude of sharpening.…”
