Updated Estimates of the Costs Associated with Thirty Four Endemic Livestock Diseases in Great Britain: A Note

Abstract: This Note outlines the further development of a system of models for the estimation of the costs of livestock diseases first presented by Bennett (2003). The models have been developed to provide updated and improved estimates of the costs associated with 34 endemic diseases of livestock in Great Britain, using border prices and including assessments of the impact of diseases on human health and animal welfare. Results show that, of the diseases studied, mastitis has the highest costs for cattle diseases, enzo… Show more

“…Indeed, animal health often makes up a surprisingly small share of total costs (Matthews 2001). In a rare example of a systematic investigation of 34 endemic diseases in Great Britain, Bennett & IJpelaar (2005) estimated the costs of disease and disease control at nearly 600 million GB pounds. Four diseases (mastitis, lameness, bovine viral diarrhoea and enzootic abortion) were responsible for two-thirds of this.…”

“…Liver fluke infection affects farm income especially in terms of poor productivity, reduced milk yield and livers trimmed or condemned at slaughter. In the UK, costs of chronic infection in cattle alone have been estimated at £40 million per year (Bennett and IJpelaar, 2005).…”

“…The associated health effects associated with Eimeria infection in broilers intuitively raises concerns about animal welfare. Bennett and Ijpelaar (2005) calculated an animal welfare score for livestock diseases where a higher score corresponded to poorer animal welfare. In their study, coccidiosis in poultry was given a score of 0 to 2, compared to 1 to 49 for infectious bronchitis and 1 to 23 for skeletal problems (Bennett & Ijpelaar, 2005).…”
