Updated Land Use and Land Cover Information Improves Biomass Burning Emission Estimates

Guilherme Mataveli,
Gabriel Pereira,
Alber Sanchez
et al.

Abstract: Biomass burning (BB) emissions negatively impact the biosphere and human lives. Orbital remote sensing and modelling are used to estimate BB emissions on regional to global scales, but these estimates are subject to errors related to the parameters, data, and methods available. For example, emission factors (mass emitted by species during BB per mass of dry matter burned) are based on land use and land cover (LULC) classifications that vary considerably across products. In this work, we evaluate how BB emissio… Show more

“…These species spread after fire (Xaud et al, 2013;Numata et al, 2017;Silva et al, 2021), and remain in the area in constant cycles of mortality and growth of new individuals. Due to aboveground biomass decrease in burned areas and its committed emissions through decomposition, this process further increases carbon emissions to the atmosphere and climate warming (Aragão et al, 2018;Mataveli et al, 2023), which is an urgent topic of global interest.…”

“…Effects on soil erosion and sedimentation of water bodies have been related to land cover change [ 12 , 13 ]. Drought, fires, natural disasters, and the positive feedback from climate change have also played a role in driving land cover change [ 14 , 15 , 16 ]. The interconnection of land cover and land cover change demonstrates the importance of accurate methods to map land cover around the world.…”
