UPLC-ESI-QTRAP-MS/MS Analysis to Quantify Bioactive Compounds in Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) Waste with Potential Anti-Inflammatory Activity

Abstract: Foeniculum vulgare is a perennial aromatic plant whose cultivation produces large amounts of waste rich in bioactive compounds with promising anti-inflammatory activities. Nine selected metabolites were quantified through Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC) hyphenated to QTRAP mass spectrometry by using MRM (multiple reaction monitoring) was performed on four parts of fennel: bulb, stem, little stem, and leaf. Analysis revealed significant differences in the amount of quantified metabolites, suggest… Show more

“…Ten known metabolites were quantified in fennel waste obtained from different cultivars by UPLC-ESI-QTRAP-MS/MS analysis. Data obtained from the Tiziano variety have already been published previously [ 16 ], they are reported for a comparison with the other two varieties of different seasonality.…”

“…According to EMA guidelines, the UPLC-ESI-QTRAP-MS/MS method has been validated as previously described [ 16 , 27 ]. Each standard solution was analyzed in triplicate to assess a calibration curve by plotting the area of the external standard alongside each metabolite concentration.…”
