UPLC‐MS/MS‐based plasma lipidomics reveal a distinctive signature in systemic lupus erythematosus patients

Abstract: Global lipidomics is of considerable utility for exploring altered lipid profiles and unique diagnostic biomarkers in diseases. We aim to apply ultra‐performance liquid chromatography‐tandem mass spectrometry to characterize the lipidomics profile in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients and explore the underlying pathogenic pathways using the lipidomics approach. Plasma samples from 18 SLE patients, 20 rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, and 20 healthy controls (HC) were collected. A total of 467 lipids… Show more

“…Lipidomic and metabolomic studies are increasingly published with the aim of "biomarker" search in human plasma for various diseases including metabolic [1][2][3][4] and cardiovascular disease [5][6][7], mental [8][9][10][11] and immune-mediated diseases [12,13], cancer [14][15][16][17][18], healthy aging [19], vascular dementia [20] or Alzheimer's Disease [21][22][23][24][25]. The risk for a number of these conditions is believed to be sexdependent and contributed by psychosocial and occupational stresses and by individual anthropometric and biographic influences [26,27].…”

“…As a subset of metabolomics, lipidomics is an effective approach to study the metabolism of the cellular lipidome and to identify lipid biomarkers of diseases (Han, 2016 ; Wenk, 2005 ). Plasma lipidomics has exhibited predictive powers in diagnosis of multiple diseases such as cancers (Lee et al, 2019 ), type 2 diabetes (Razquin et al, 2018 ), cardiovascular disease (Tabassum et al, 2019 ), and systemic lupus erythematosus (Chen et al, 2021 ). A recent research has reported the identification of nine lipids from plasma lipidomic profiling to be able to detect early-stage lung cancer (Wang et al, 2022 ), although their reliability remains to be confirmed from independent studies.…”

“…However, abnormalities in cell development and function are not limited to T and B cells (7). Recently, it has been suggested that metabolic abnormalities in innate immune cells play a critical role in the pathogenesis of AIDs, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) (8,9). However, the comprehensive mechanism of innate immunity involvement in AIDs remains to be elaborated.…”
