Upper Limb’s Injuries in Agriculture: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Agriculture is one of the most hazardous economic sectors, and it accounts for many accidents and occupational diseases every year. In Italy, about one-third of injuries involve the upper extremity, with long-term consequences for the workers and economic damage for agricultural companies and farms. This systematic review describes upper limb injuries among farmworkers, especially hand injuries, and highlights the main dangerous risk factors. Literature review included articles published in the major databases… Show more

“…Additional causes, including fractures, twists, sprain, and overuse injuries, have been identified by the authors in other research. 28 In the current study we can see that 91.8% of the plantation workers experienced cut and laceration, 18.2% of the plantation workers experienced fractures, 80% of the plantation workers carried heavy loads, 69.7% experienced musculoskeletal disorders, 25.6% of the plantation workers fell from tree and 6.2% of the workers had an experience of drowning in the water.…”

“…As PPE, they should be considered for the health protection of workers only when all other organizational measures to reduce occupational risks are taken and certified according to the Regulation (EU) 2016/425 on personal protective equipment ( 96 ). However, there are many workplaces that are not tied to a specific location (e.g., agriculture), where ergonomic design measures cannot be implemented because of the changing environmental requirements and where heavy manual material handling is common and injury risk is high ( 97 ). As PAADs should be considered during the workplace risk assessment, the potential risks of exoskeletons in working environments, for example, during a slip or a fall accident and perhaps the massive introduction of exoskeletons in industrial settings should pass through a redesign of workplaces ( 98 ).…”

“…The mechanization of agricultural work reduces the arduous work associated with MSDs. Although mechanization has reduced farmers’ work and has made their work more sustainable, at the same time, machines can also be a major risk factor due to a lack of safety mechanisms, high noise, and vibration [ 50 ]. Improving the working conditions of older farmers requires interventions that consider the ergonomics of older female farmers when designing agricultural equipment or systems [ 51 ].…”
