In brief, self-completion questionnaires (on various health-related factors including dietary, drinking and smoking habits as well as history of major diseases) were handdistributed to all _>40 year-old residents in two entire villages of Tajiri and Wakuya (the rural area) and 6 primary school sectors in the central Sendai (the urban area) in Miyagi prefecture, Japan, and hand-collected from 31,769 respondents (excluding those who submitted incomplete and therefore ineffective questionnaires), in January-February of 1984.…”
