Upregulation of the long noncoding RNA UCA1 affects the proliferation, invasion, and survival of hypopharyngeal carcinoma

Abstract: BackgroundSeveral long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are involved in oncogenesis. Methods and ResultsOur microarray analysis showed that numerous lncRNAs are dysregulated in hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HSCC) tumor tissues as compared with normal tissues. Among those lncRNAs, urothelial carcinoma-associated 1 (UCA1) has been found to have an oncogenic role in HSCC. We confirmed the upregulation of UCA1 in HSCC by assessing its expression levels in a cohort of 53 patient tumors and paired non-tumor samples… Show more

“…Hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HSCC) is an aggressive tumour arising from the outer layer (epithelium) of the upper aerodigestive tract and accounts for 5%‐15% of all head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) . Due to the recent improvements in modern comprehensive treatment strategies including surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the 5‐year survival rate for patients with early‐stage HSCC is as high as 70%; however, the majority of HSCCs are diagnosed at an advanced stage (stage III or IV), with a 5‐year survival rate of about 35%, and HSCC patients are also vulnerable to relapse.…”

“…These RNAs regulate gene expression through multiple approaches at the transcriptional, posttranscriptional, and epigenetic levels, such as by recruiting transcription factors or directly binding to proteins, RNA, and DNA (Bergmann & Spector, ; Chen, ; Johnson, ). Noteworthy, abnormal expression of lncRNAs play a vital role in the development and progression of cancers, which might serve as biomarkers for tumor diagnosis and prognostic (Bergmann and Spector, ; Chang et al, ; Chen, ; Meng et al, ; Qian et al, ).…”

“…Aberrant expression of some lncRNAs has been demonstrated to be associated with tumor progression, as well as with the clinical outcome in various cancers (Xue et al, 2016;Qian et al, 2017;Su et al, 2017;Zhuo and Kang., 2017). Until recently, lncRNA PCAT-1 has been considered as an potential diagnostic/ prognostic biomarker in a wide variety of neoplasms, including ovarian cancer (Qian et al, 2017;Cao et al, 2014), prostate cancer (Karlsson et al, 2016;Chandra Gupta et al, 2017), colorectal cancer (Qi et al, 2013;, non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) (Shi et al, 2015). Lnc-PCAT-1 was firstly known as a prostatespecific regulator of cell proliferation correlated with the degree of cell differentiation.…”
