“…The zinc concentrations recorded in our study for C. nodosa exceeded the background level for non-contaminated areas in stations BW and PW (Moore & Ramamoorthy, 1984). In these stations zinc and lead levels in different parts of the plant were higher than in other studies previously published (Capone, Mascia, Porcu, & Tagliasacchi-Masala, 1983;Prange & Dennison, 2000;Sanchiz, García-Carrascosa, & Pastor, 2000). The highest Zn concentration in the three plant fractions studied at all the study sites, except BW station, was located in the leaf material.…”

“…In the thalli of U. flexuosa species from the Fiji Islands, the concentrations of Pb were reported to range between < 5 and 62 μg g -1 (TABUDRAVU et al, 2002). High concentrations of Pb (± 28.4 μg g -1 ) have also been discovered by CAPONE et al (1983) in the tubular Ulva thalli collected from lagoons in Sardinia. HORNUNG et al (1992) have found concentrations of Pb reaching 12.6 μg g -1 in the thalli of U. compressa from the Mediterranean Sea coast in Israel.…”

“…Heavy metal contents measured in zooplankton samples were compared with corresponding reports from several authors: Martin and Knauer (1973) for Monterrey Bay, California, USA; Capone et al (1983) for Sardinia, Italy; Van Duyn-Henderson and Lasenby (1986) for Southern Ontario, Canada; Rainbow (1989) for North-Eastern Atlantic ( Table 2). The measured values should be considered as the background zooplankton levels from the evaluated coastal area, but the mean concentration for several elements (i.e., Pb, Fe, Mn) (Table 1) suggests that this area is receiving allochtonous metal inputs from anthropogenic origin.…”
