“…In the Cabo Frio system, nitrate is the main limiting nutrient but phosphate and to a lesser degree iron and molybdenum are also important in the regulation of phytoplankton biomass growth (GONZALEZ-RODRIGUEZ, 1991). Chlorophyll a concentrations reported in the main upwelling area of the Cabo Frio region varied between 0.5 and 6.0 mg/m 3 (GONZALEZ-RODRIGUEZ et al, 1992;PEREIRA et al, 2009a) but a value of 21 mg/m3 was observed during a microalgae bloom in the Cabo Frio Embayment. These values are comparable with those found in shelf and coastal areas of the southern and eastern Pacific (MONTECINO et al, 2004;PENNINGTON et al, 2006).…”

“…SACW has a higher temperature and lower nutrient concentrations at Cabo Frio as compared to the water of the Benguela system, since nitrate values fall from 30 µM in the Benguela system (BROWN; FIELD, 1986) to as little as 18 µM in the Cabo Frio region (GONZALEZ-RODRIGUEZ et al, 1992). In the Canary Is.…”

“…The planktonic dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum was induced to prey in limiting nitrogen and phosphorus experimental conditions and feeding was never observed under nutrient replete conditions (JOHNSON, 2015). The study area is among the most productive regions in the Brazilian littoral due to the occurrence of coastal upwelling, particularly during austral summer that sustains high primary productivity and marine biodiversity (VALENTIN, 1984;GONZALEZ-RODRIGUEZ et al, 1992). Therefore, it is likely that benthic dinoflagellates from the study area were nutrient sufficient, a condition that would not stimulate the occurrence of phagotrophy.…”

“…The particular orientation of the Rio de Janeiro coast, with coastline changing abruptly from north-south to eastwest direction, moves the coastal water away from the coast and toward the ocean, and favors the intrusion and spread of the SACW. This water mass occurs at the thermocline depth in the open ocean, which intrudes over the inner continental shelf near the bottom, and eventually upwells to the surface near the coast (Moreira da Silva, 1971;Gonzalez-Rodriguez et al, 1992;Campos et al, 2000;Mahiques et al, 2005). The rise of the SACW determines the local upwelling events, and the magnitude of these events is influenced by winds, the configuration of the coast and by the ocean-bottom topography of the Cabo Frio region (Stramma & Peterson, 1990;Rodrigues & Lorenzetti, 2001).…”
