Urban Air Pollutant Monitoring through a Low-Cost Mobile Device Connected to a Smart Road

Abstract: Air pollutant monitoring is a basic issue in contemporary urban life. This paper describes an approach based on the diffused use of low-cost sensors that can be mounted on board urban vehicles for more abundant and distributed measures. The system exchanges data, exploiting a “Smart Road” infrastructure, with a central computing facility, the CIPCast platform, a GIS-based Decision Support System designed to perform real-time monitoring and interpolation of data with the aim of possibly issuing alarms with resp… Show more

“…For example, google street view cars which are dedicated and modified vehicles also used for air pollution monitoring, in works like [8] [72] [73]. Other vehicle types can also be used, such as work in [74], deployed low-cost sensor device on the laboratory van through the cable hole on the vehicle's roof for monitoring urban air pollutants. With dedicated vehicles, air quality sensing operations can have fewer time constraints, extensive spatial coverage, and diverse manageable movement.…”

“…The system was also used to collect NO2, NOX, and CO2 at 1s interval in London, UK between Sep 2018, and Oct 2019 as part of Breathe London Project. Chiesa et al [91] deployed low-cost sensor an optical particulate matter sensor on the laboratory van through the cable hole on the roof of the vehicle for monitoring urban air pollutants. The system has been used in the experimental field campaign to measure air quality in Rome, Italy.…”

“…As the monitoring of air pollution becomes more important throughout the world, many studies and papers have been published that looked into developing cheaper, more accessible air quality measurement systems that can be deployed even in remote or underdeveloped areas. Low-cost solutions are often published [7][8][9][10], as many authors try to develop simpler sensors or techniques to monitor various air quality parameters, such as the concentration of CO, NO 2 , and particulate matter. Sometimes these systems are developed for very specific purposes [11], as the world transitions to a fossil-fuel-free future.…”
