Urban Design Qualities Related Walkability in a Commercial Neighbourhood

Abstract: This study explored the relations of urban design qualities, the adaptability and people’s preference for walking on a commercial street. The research employed survey research method using a self-administered questionnaire applying Likert scale and multiple rating scale techniques. One hundred and three respondents participated in the study. Descriptive statistics and correlations analysis were used to answer the research questions. Results indicated the adaptability quality of a street may depend on the spati… Show more

“…As pointed out by the US FHWA (2013), the methods of pedestrian counting have been inconsistent in applications. In the urban design field, the authors of several studies counted pedestrians passing a specific point or a line where someone was observing (Ameli et al 2015; Hajrasouliha and Yin 2015; Rodríguez, Brisson, and Estupiñán 2009), while other studies recorded pedestrians that passed the observer from the following direction, as the observer walked down a sidewalk (Alasadi 2016; Ernawati, Adhitama, and Sudarmo 2016; Ewing et al 2016; Maxwell 2016; Ozbil, Peponis, and Stone 2011; Yin 2017).…”

“…This study utilizes their methodology of pedestrian counting. Their protocol has been applied in subsequent studies throughout the world (Alasadi 2016; Ernawati, Adhitama, and Sudarmo 2016; Ewing et al 2016; Hamidi and Moazzeni 2018; Maxwell 2016; Yin 2017).…”

“…Urban design qualities have been used as a framework in both quantitative studies [23,54,68,69] and qualitative studies [55,60]. Meanwhile, other researchers have also evaluated the street using personal observations [54,55].…”
