Objectives: To identify the validated and reliable indicators and tools to assess good governance for population health, wellbeing, and equity in urban settings, and assess processes of multisectoral action and civic engagement as reported by peer-reviewed articles.Methods: We conducted a systematic review searching six databases for observational studies reporting strategies of either urban health, multisectoral action or civic engagement for wellbeing, health, or equity.Results: Out of 8,154 studies initially identified we included 17. From the included studies, 14 presented information about high-income countries. The general population was the main target in most studies. Multisectoral action was the most frequently reported strategy (14 studies). Three studies used Urban Health Equity Assessment and Response Tool (Urban HEART). Health indicators were the most frequently represented (6 studies). Barriers and facilitators for the implementation of participatory health governance strategies were reported in 12 studies.Conclusion: Data on the implementation of participatory health governance strategies has been mainly reported in high-income countries. Updated and reliable data, measured repeatedly, is needed to closely monitor these processes and further develop indicators to assess their impact on population health, wellbeing, and equity.

Recent events have ignited widespread attention to structural racism and implicit bias throughout the U.S. health care system and medical institutions, resulting in a call for antiracism approaches to advance health equity. Medical education leaders are well positioned to advance health equity, not only through their training of fellows, residents, and medical students, but also in their approach to scholarship. Education scholarship drives innovation and critical evaluation of current practices; it impacts and intersects with multiple factors that have the potential to reduce health inequities. Thus, it is critical to prioritize the assessment of education scholarship through a health equity lens. Medical education scholarly dissemination has markedly expanded over the past 2 to 3 decades, yet medical educators have continued to embrace Boyer’s and Glassick and colleagues’ definitions of scholarship. The authors propose an approach to medical education scholarship assessment that expands each of Glassick’s 6 existing criteria to address health inequities and adds health equity as a seventh criterion. With this, medical educators, researchers, reviewers, and others can consider how education scholarship affects diverse populations and settings, direct educational products and scholarship to address health inequities, and raise the importance of advancing health equity in medical education scholarship. By expanding and standardizing the assessment of scholarship to incorporate health equity, the medical education community can foster a cultural shift that brings health equity to the forefront of education scholarship.

The complex health demands of society emphasize the need for future health professionals to gain a deeper understanding of social determinants of health (SDOH) and provide meaningful health outcomes. Seventeen undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in a cross-listed public health elective course in Winter 2020 completed a remote application-based course project. This project was conducted to expand students’ comprehension of SDOH as underlying factors contributing to health disparities and inequities. It also sought to increase their awareness of tools and resources in the community to aid populations in overcoming determinants. Last, it aimed to provide them with experience applying population health concepts and enhancing their research skills. The course project utilized a real-world application approach as it consisted of students (1) developing a Detroit-focused community resource guide, (2) creating a related resource map, and (3) composing two manuscripts on the course project and learning experience. Students’ deliverables included a developed community resource guide and related interactive map and the construction of the manuscripts on the project and their learning experience, which was separated into two manuscripts. Students completed a journal reflection, which was used to assess their learning experience. Students’ journal reflections were examined using NVivo12 to identify the six themes in their learning experience. The project effectively met the course learning outcomes while aiding students in recognizing Detroit’s health disparities and the influence of SDOH. It also provided students with deliverables.
