Urban Heritage as a Generator of Landscapes: Building New Geographies from Post-Urban Decline in Detroit

Abstract: At this historical moment, the urban planning and design professions are confronted with the twin challenges of unprecedented rapid urbanization on the one hand, and declining post-industrial regions on the other. In this environment, there are many different and often conflicting ideas about urban heritage and its relevance for contemporary urban planning and design. In this paper, we look for commonalities and a way forward from among a range of competing urban design models. We examine the illustrative case… Show more

“…We define our findings based on the heritage urbanism model in which Locke et al [15] (p. 12) defined urban heritage as an infrastructure and a public good for community's benefits. “…Accordingly, by focusing on relations between sustainable development and strategic spatial planning, which includes urban design as a place making process, we turn to the relatively new model and the concept of the heritage urbanism. Heritage urbanism, seen it that way, can also contribute to the sense of place, attachment and recreate lost social bonds within the community.…”

“…They have affected towns and cities differently. While certain regions have been left with challenges linked to socalled 'shrinking cities', others have experienced revived interest in urban living, entered a new positive phase and are thriving and expanding (Locke et al 2018).…”

“…Another process that has greatly affected the built structures in urban areas is urban planning. In a study that promoted 'heritage urbanism' as an approach to revitalise shrinking cities, an overview of seven domineering urban planning and design paradigms since 1940 was presented (Locke et al 2018). This study focused on the treatment of heritage and found a remarkable shift in attitude towards the treatment of urban heritage during the last decade (2018,(4)(5).…”

“…Focusing on relations between sustainable development and strategic spatial planning 'Heritage Urbanism' appears in the last few years [9]. It considers heritage as a valuable systems approach that acts as a regenerative layer and a common good for the development of the contemporary city [10]. Hence, there is much literature on individual heritage-related topic and project models but revitalization and enhancement of heritage integral within the historical and cultural context clearly lacks [11].…”
