Urban Horticulture for Food Secure Cities through and beyond COVID-19

Abstract: Sufficient production, consistent food supply, and environmental protection in urban +settings are major global concerns for future sustainable cities. Currently, sustainable food supply is under intense pressure due to exponential population growth, expanding urban dwellings, climate change, and limited natural resources. The recent novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic crisis has impacted sustainable fresh food supply, and has disrupted the food supply chain and prices significantly. Under these circums… Show more

“…On the opposite side of the spectrum, allotment gardens, as partitioned green spaces, preassigned to "social bubbles" (mostly families), might be fitting to the challenges of a pandemic as well [88]. An increasing interest in local food production, food security [89], and self-sufficiency, particularly in the times of crisis, adds to allotment gardens popularity, that resulted in a great demand and gardens' price increase [90].…”

“…caused a delay in the supply chain and shortages in retail stores [4]. The lockdowns that marked the beginning and end of 2020 revealed a change in consumer behavior patterns which resulted in a major disparity between supply and demand, delays and errors in deliveries, impaired conditions of product safety, and difficulty in storing and keeping supplies, especially in countries and regions with underdeveloped infrastructure and a lack of transparency in the supply chain [5].…”

“…Beyond esthetics, green roof provides an array of benefits and ecosystem services that can be briefly summarized in stormwater retention to reduce peak flow and runoff, water quality improvement for water utilization, thermal benefits to improve the microclimate and reduce the energy costs within the buildings, urban heat island effect mitigation, air cleaning for easy comfort in urban areas, and ecological and socio-economic benefits [ 26 , 29 ]. Green roofs are also being increasingly considered for urban food production, especially after the recent novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic crisis that led cities to think about the population demand for food, the dependence on imports, and the impact of unpredicted food supply chains disruptions [ 46 ].…”
