Urban population exposure to air pollution in Europe over the last decades

Abstract: Background The paper presents an overview of air quality in the 27 member countries of the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (previous EU-28), from 2000 to 2017. We reviewed the progress made towards meeting the air quality standards established by the EU Ambient Air Quality Directives (European Council Directive 2008/50/EC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) Air Quality Guidelines by estimating the trends (Mann-Kendal test) in national emissions of main air pollutants, urban popu… Show more

“…Benzene and other aromatic compounds are important precursors of secondary organic aerosols formed by photochemical oxidation reactions and heterogeneous reactions in the presence of solar radiation and nitrogen oxides (which are usually present in the pollutant atmosphere) [ 4 , 5 ]. Numerous studies measured major pollutants within and outside urban areas of different cities worldwide [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ].…”

“…At the same time, transport contributes to climate change, air pollution, and noise. In the last few years, there has been a decrease in pollutant emissions in the European Union (EU-28) for many substances, e.g., NO x by 46%, CO by 49%, PM2.5 by 31%, and PM10 by 29% [2,3]. This confirms the effectiveness of the implementation of air pollution control strategies.…”

“…Many articles focus on explaining the connections between pollutants and their toxicological effects on the environment [7]. Outdoor air pollution led to an estimated 4.2 million premature deaths worldwide and half a million in the European Union (EU) in 2016 [8,9]. Exposure to ambient PM 2.5 particulate matter has been found to be associated with different negative health endpoints, from minor respiratory symptoms to premature mortality.…”
