Urban Quality of Life: Spatial Modeling and Indexing in Athens Metropolitan Area, Greece

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to assess and visualize the Quality of Life provided by urban space as a place of residence. The proposed methodology, after its theoretical documentation, is implemented in Athens Metropolitan Area, Greece. For the evaluation of Urban Quality of Life, a complex index is constructed by using multicriteria analysis. For this purpose, Quality of Life controlling factors such as built space, natural, socioeconomic, and cultural environment, infrastructure and services, and the quality… Show more

“…Zhang and Pryce (2020) developed a generalized formula for the RCI (Relative Centralization Index), in order to measure the implications of the decentralization of poverty for access to amenities and employment in Wales and England [45]. Faka et al (2021) constructed an index to assess the quality of life in urban spaces in the Athens Metropolitan Area, taking into account factors such as social-economic, natural and cultural environments, infrastructures, services, and quality of housing [46]. However, on the basis of the proximity of the two urban contexts and the methodological approach, the work Davino et al (2021) has been of particular interest for this research.…”

“…This phenomenon has become Environmental Management and Sustainable Development ISSN 2164-7682 2023 the dominant urbanization pattern since the second half of the 20th century (UN Human Settlement Program, 2001). Metropolitan areas are considered the center of wealth, capital and production at national, regional and even global levels (Faka et al, 2021;Albouy, 2008;Türksever and Atalik, 2001). Metropolitan life is considered the most advanced stage in human life.…”

“…Most of the existing studies on urban QoL assessment have served as tools for conducting rankings and making guides ( 24 ), and Providing guidance on making development policies. Naturally, their attention is primarily on cities: some deal with the QoL of a single city ( 14 , 18 , 25 ); some compare that of multiple cities ( 16 , 26 , 27 ); some draw comparisons between different areas within a city ( 28–30 ), and still some compare cities within a country ( 31 ). However, in recent years, there has been a growing trend toward researching the QoL assessment of counties as an administrative unit.…”

“…Those focusing on urban development mostly used quantitative methods, in which statistical analysis methods and tools such as importance performance analysis (IPA), information entropy, equalization index, structural equation modeling, and hierarchical multiple linear regression analysis have been widely applied ( 11 , 32 , 34 ). Another widely used tool is GIS, which has grown into an important work platform in urban QoL assessments involving spatial pattern analysis ( 28 , 35 ). Also playing a crucial role in such assessments is spatial autocorrelation analysis ( 32 , 35 ).…”
