Urban soils research: SUITMA 10

Abstract: Research on Soils in Urban, Industrial, Traffic, Mining and Military Areas (SUITMA) has been presented at biennial SUITMA conferences held in cities around the world. Soils from these areas often present environmental, ecological, and health risks and can limit ecological functions and ecosystem services. However, as with all soils, they are an integral part of the local ecosystem. In urban areas in particular, soil is a critical resource and can play a key role in the long‐term sustainability and resiliency o… Show more

“…80 The Working Group of the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) on Soils in Urban, Industrial, Traffic, Mining and Military Areas suggests that the urban soils with greater anthropogenic influences are vital to the sustainability and resiliency of cities. 81 The CECs will create the environmental concerns, more in urban soils than in rural soils. Nevertheless, the contaminants of both conventional and emerging types pose serious scientific and societal challenges to the global soil security, beyond soil health concerns, because of their complicated and cascading effects on the health of individual members and the whole ecosystem.…”

“…Urban soils are studied primarily for their role in creating a sustainable environment, and they are also important for health [71]. According to Cheng et al [72], urban soils are a critical resource that can play a key role in the long-term sustainability and resilience of cities. Therefore, a more careful urban soil policy is necessary for large cities.…”

“…Some international organizations and scholars have attached great importance to the classification of anthropogenic engineering soils. The Soils of Urban, Industrial, Traffic, Mining, and Military Areas international conference is held once every two years [10,11]. The International Commission for Anthropogenic Soils (ICOMANTH) was established in 1995 in the United States to deepen the study of anthropogenic soils.…”
