Theoretically, it develops two related conceptual tools: (1) Principles of vision and division: following Pierre Bourdieu's ideas on the predominant symbolic classifications by which we observe and organise our social world, these are classificatory schemes and categories (e.g., racial, religious, ethnic, economic) through which urban strateg… Show more

“…Ache (2011) describes visions as a 'new collective choice rule', not in the sense of rule exactly, but a 'loose framework prescribing and invoking norms for future development'. Ache (2017) and Marom (2019) argue that conceptually visions reflect how actors 'see' or 'conceive' the city and are 'powerful vectors' in moulding the socio-economic geography within them. They give a form as well as embed newer 'spatial categories' and 'hierarchies' through 'narratives', 'words' or 'images' that have potential effects of exclusion or inclusion in a given context.…”

“…These include STS-Science Technology and Society perspective (Jasanoff, 2015); Ostrom's (2005) Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) framework; 'sociology of expectations' (Van Lente, 2012) among others. In terms of the findings from empirical works (Marom, 2019;Robinson, 2008;Roy, 2011a) there is a consensus that visioning exercises are yet to realise their potential in expanding political and developmental horizons. The majority of the visions and visioning exercises are falling within the realm of 'realpolitik' and 'status quo' (Ache, 2017).…”
