Abstract: The present study examines urbanicity-related differences in help-seeking process among preschool children with autism and investigates the factors associated with utilization of autism-related services within the year of diagnosis. “…This finding is inconsistent with previous studies that suggested that families in rural areas encounter specific difficulties in their search for services (Chen et al 2008;Hutton and Caron 2005;Kohler 1999;Mandell et al 2005;Pennington et al 2009). The population-based approach used in Québec to promote an equitable provision of services among all families living within a catchment area may explain this discrepancy.…”

“…To date, however, there is little evidence for the influence of such environmental pollutants including specific agents on the development of ASD (Kalkbrenner et al 2010). Our finding of an increased risk of ASD in urban areas compared to rural areas is in accordance with findings from studies of geographically and ethnically diverse areas such as Japan (Hoshino et al 1982), Taiwan (Chen et al 2008), and the United States (Rosenberg et al 2009). Furthermore, in a systematic review of prevalence studies of ASD, Williams et al (2006) found an association between urban residence of the child and ASD.…”

“…A detailed description of EC classification is described elsewhere. 24 The clinical characteristics of medical comorbidities (ie, myocardial infarction [MI], congestive heart failure [CHF], stroke, DM, cancer, systemic lupus erythematosus [SLE], rheumatoid arthritis [RA], osteoarthritis, gout, and calculus of kidney and ureter); medication use in the past year (ie, antihypertensive drugs, statin, aspirin, urate-lowering drugs, and proton pump inhibitors); and the CCI score (=0, 1-2, and ≥3) were also examined in this study. Because the primary outcome of interest was incident CKD in patients with hypertension, moderate or severe renal disease was not included in the CCI score calculation.…”
