Ureteral Stent Insertion in the Management of Renal Colic during Pregnancy

Abstract: To determine an optimal invasive intervention for renal colic patients during pregnancy after conservative treatments have been found to be unhelpful. Among the available invasive interventions, we investigated the reliability of a ureteral stent insertion, which is considered the least invasive intervention during pregnancy. Between June 2006 and February 2015, a total of 826 pregnant patients came to the emergency room or urology outpatient department, and 39 of these patients had renal colic. The mean patie… Show more

“…Some studies have proven the safety of ureteral stents placement in pregnancy, which is a more invasive procedure than solely a diagnostic cystoscopy. 30,31 Unfortunately, in PAS cases where the placenta implantation is away from the uterine-bladder interface (i.e. fundal implantation), cystoscopy may not be particularly useful.…”

“…Therefore, it is very important to distinguish symptomatic hydronephrosis in pregnancy and to provide appropriate treatment. Approximately 70%-80% of patients with symptomatic hydronephrosis are treated conservatively, while the remaining 20%-30% require invasive treatments (11). Some predictive factors anticipating the success of the intervention are also important in the choice of invasive procedures, besides patient and physician preference.…”

“…The most common cause of hydronephrosis in pregnancy is due to the physiological changes. On the other hand, urolithiasis, urinary system anomalies or spontaneous rupture of the renal pelvis may cause hydronephrosis during the pregnancy [6][7] . In our case cause of the hydronephrosis was Y type bifid ureter which is a common congenital collecting system anomaly.…”
