Urethral Obstruction Owing to Retroperitoneal Cystic Lymphangioma

Abstract: We report a case of cystic lymphangioma arising from retroperitoneal tissues of the pelvis, which caused urethral obstruction and eventual urinary retention. Sonography and computerized tomography demonstrated a retroperitoneal cystic mass in the pelvis. A preoperative diagnosis of retroperitoneal cystic lymphangioma was suggested by typical computerized and sonographic features.

“…To our knowledge, thirty-seven cases of retroperitoneal cystic lymphangioma have been reported in the pediatric population [1 -3, 5 -10,12 -16,18 -23, 25, 26]. Moreover, there were only five cases of cystic lymphangioma originating from the Retzius space or the paravesical retroperitoneal space including the present case [1,7,10,23]. Retroperitoneal cystic lymphangiomas are usually found as a symptomatic or an asymptomatic abdominal mass, or incidentally at operation or during ultrasound or CT scan performed for another clinical le-sion.…”

“…Retroperitoneal cystic lymphangioma rarely presents with symptoms. It can occur as a painless or painful abdominal mass [5,8,13,20,21,26], and symptoms can include abdominal pain [1, 5, 6,12,13,15,16,19 -23, 25], symptoms associated with ureteric [1,3,8,16,25] or urethral obstruction [10], hematuria secondary to bladder wall involvement [7], and inguinal hernia [9]. Only one neonatal case suffered from abdominal distention [2].…”

“…Bei den uns vorliegenden Studienergebnissen sind die ha Èufigsten klinischen Symptome durch das verdra Èngende Wachstum der Lymphangiome gepra Ègt, die insbesondere bei Obstruktion der ableitenden Harnwege oder des Intestinaltraktes eine Rolle spielen [6]. Unser Patient war durch Enuresis und Pollakisurie auffa Èllig geworden, und die Pelottierung der Blasenwand von dorsal her schien eine plausible Erkla Èrung zu sein.…”
