Urinary incontinence in elderly women from Porto Alegre: its prevalence and relation to pelvic floor muscle function

Abstract: | The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to assess the prevalence of self-reported urinary loss in elderly women living in the city of Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil), as well as to determine the relation between urinary incontinence (UI) and pelvic floor muscle function (PFMF). It included 270 elderly women (aged from 60 to 92 years) from a population sample, who reported the presence (n=155; 69.1±7.8 years) or absence (n=115; 67.7±7.9 years) of urine loss. Those who reported UI were asked abo… Show more

“…1). The excluded studies did not present the criteria for evaluation of the PEDro Scale, 25,3437 have a very large age range or lack of age data, 3842 one pilot study, 12 sample of young athletes, 43,44 and pregnant women. 45,46 Although 5 studies present a classification between 4 and 8 in the PEDro Scale, only 1 study does not present a description of the digital palpation, 8 and the remaining participants have an average age of 44 to 60 years.…”

“…However, other researchers also found rates similar to those presented in this study. 5,9,10,16 The prevalence of UI in women varies widely across the world, with rates ranging from 11.5 17 to 62.5%. 16 These differences can be attributed to the different approaches used in diagnosing (self-report or clinical examination) and to sample size.…”

“…Some UI risk factors have been highlighted in the literature, such as: delivery birth, pelvic surgeries, high body mass index, smoking, depression, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and poor health conditions in general . There is consistent evidence that UI occurrence, especially of the urge incontinence type, increases with age, especially in women …”

“…The prevalence of UI in women in general equals 7-37% [2]. Despite this dysfunction being clearly associated with multiparity, advanced age, menopause, Caucasian race and female sex [3][4][5][6], different studies relate UI with physical exercise, since exercise is associated with an increase of intraabdominal pressure, as well as a descendent displacement of the pelvic organs and, consequently, damage to the muscles that support this area [7][8][9][10]. Therefore, participants of physical exercise of high impact are the most prone to developing this dysfunction [11].…”
