Urine carcinoembryonic antigen levels are more useful than serum levels for early detection of Bilharzial and non-Bilharzial urinary bladder carcinoma: Observations of 43 Egyptian cases

Abstract: Background: Both urinary bilharziasis and urothelial neoplasia are associated with increased production of tissue carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA).

“…However, CEA is known to be a low‐abundance biomarker in these fluids (≈0.2 ng mL −1 and ≈1 ng mL −1 in urine and saliva, respectively). [ 9,10,43,44 ] We additionally tested our ability to quantify CEA in these biofluids without sample processing and observed similar results to that of a serum test (Figure 5f). For the saliva solution, the biosensor signal, Δ I ph /I ph0 , linearly ( R 2 = 0.9453) increased with the CEA concentration ranging from 10 −3 to 10 3 ng mL −1 , and the LOD was determined to be 0.92 × 10 −3 ng mL −1 .…”

“…Amongst studies evaluating non-instrumental tools for the diagnosis of Schistosoma -related bladder cancer, one report evaluated the dosage of urinary CEA. Eighty-six per cent of patients with Schistosoma -related bladder cancer presented elevated value of urinary CEA, compared to 62% of patient with bladder cancer not related to Schistosoma and 0% of controls without cancer nor schistosomiasis [ 60 ]. Although the authors did not test for differences between schistosomal and non- Schistosoma -associated bladder cancers, there was no statistical difference applying a t test to the data presented in the article ( p = 0.1076, mean CEA 74.27 ± 64.96 SD vs 43.86 ± 55.66 SD).…”

“…CEA levels are typically measured through a simple blood dra The blood sample is then sent to a laboratory where specialized assays are used to qua tify the CEA concentration. Apart from blood, CEA can also be detected in other bo fluids, such as urine [12]. CEA can be found in urine, particularly in cases of certain ca cers like bladder cancer and colorectal cancer with metastases to the urinary tract.…”
