Abstract:Summar\/-Urological complications were studied in 310 live donor kidney transplants. All recipients and donors were investigated for urinary schistosomiasis by examining tissue obtained intra-operatively from the donor's ureter or the patient's bladder. Schistosomiasis was histologically documented in 76 cases (patient's bladder (46), donor's ureter (9), both (21)). The incidence of urological complications was 11/76 (1 5%) in the schistosomal group and 14/234 (6%) in the nonschistosomal group; this was statis… Show more
“…The potential impact of urinary bilharziasis has been addressed by several studies [29–33] with controversial conclusions. In the present series the rate of complications among patients with evidence of bilharziasis was 10%, while that among patients with no evidence was 7.4%; this difference was not statistically significant in the univariate analysis.…”
Egypt percutaneous drainage reduces morbidity and the likelihood loss of graft function. Proper and prompt management should not affect the graft and/or the patient's survival.

“…Urological complications were extensively assessed in a prospective study including 310 live‐donor kidney transplants [24]. All recipients and donors were investigated for urinary schistosomiasis by examining tissue obtained during surgery from the donor's ureter or patient's bladder.…”

“…No deaths or graft losses were directly attributable either to these complications or to their surgical correction. From that study it was concluded that the estimated frequency of urological complications of 15% among the schistosomal recipients remains acceptable and does not contraindicate renal transplantation, as it did not affect either patient or graft survival [24].…”

“…Urethral stricture is a common urological complication after renal transplantation, usually seen as a complication of catheterization or urinary tract infection 1 . We report a case of recurrent urethral stricture caused by schistosomiasis in a renal transplant recipient.…”

“…Schistosomiasis is common in patients with high‐risk water exposure in endemic areas including the Middle East, Africa and South America 1 . Chronic infection with Schistosoma haematobium is associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer, urinary tract infection and urological complications such as ureteric fistula and obstructive uropathy 1 . Complications are often silent and not detected until irreversible changes have occurred.…”
