Show more

“…The rapid expansion of crop cultivation (Baraibar Norberg, 2020) over the last 20 years involved a reprimarization of Uruguay's economy, which focused on a few agricultural commodities that presently comprise 82% of export goods in terms of economic value (UruguayXXI, 2020) . While Uruguay's productive capacity could feed an estimated 30-60 million people (Gómez Perazzoli, 2019;i.e., 10-20 times the local population) there is still prevalence of malnutrition and food insecurity . This is aligned with regional trends (FAO et al, 2021;Arrieta et al, 2022) and represents a significant contradiction for a net-food exporting region.…”

“…In 2019 the country's main export product was beef, followed by cellulose, soybeans and dairy products (Uruguay XXI 2019). During the last 20 years, the consolidation of hegemonic production models, highly dependent on synthetic chemical inputs and large-scale machinery, has been consolidated, with increasing concentration of productive area in fewer owners, intensification of natural resources usage and higher use of water, with its consequential impact on quality (Alonso et al, 2020;García Préchac et al, 2010;Gómez Perazzoli, 2019). These models have been promoted by government policies in recent decades, supported by multilateral financial institutions, and have great support from the majority of farmers and other rural actors.…”
