Objective The development and the evaluation of the Healthy Meals web app designed for professionals from different disciplines related to food, aimed to assess the nutritional and food allergen content of restaurant meals, was described. Methods App evaluation concerned: (1) usability, scored on a 7-point scale by 6 restaurateurs and 10 nutritionists through the Computer System Usability Questionnaire; (2) quality, scored on a 5-point scale by 10 nutritionists through the Mobile App Rating Scale; (3) validation, by two nutritionists through differences in entered nutrient contents. Ratings reliability was assessed by the interclass correlation coefficient. Results Users agreed with the web app usability (mean 5.6/7 points, SD 0.9), with moderate reliability among ratings (interclass correlation coefficient = 0.57; 95% CI, 0.18 to 0.82). The web app showed good objective quality (mean 4.0/5 points, SD 0.4), with excellent reliability among nutritionists (interclass correlation coefficient = 0.91; 95% CI, 0.85 to 0.96). For web app validation, no significant differences were observed between the two nutritionists’ data, with excellent reliability (interclass correlation coefficient = 0.98; 95% CI, 0.97 to 0.99). App data entry was identified as a point to improve. Conclusions The Healthy Meals web app designed for professionals related to food, such as restaurateurs, demonstrated to be usable, of good quality and valid for dishes nutritional assessment and food allergen identification. Points to improve were identified, while app effectiveness should be tested in trials.

Studies on heuristic evaluation of mobile applications have been an emerging domain. However, existing checklists are too general and unable to clearly define the measurements for evaluating mobile shopping applications. This paper proposes suitable heuristics under the learnability measure for a checklist in conducting heuristic evaluation in supporting the inclusivity of a mobile shopping application. This study was conducted in two phases: generate the learnability measures based on heuristics and sub-heuristics from content analysis and verify the proposed heuristic evaluation checklist from the learnability measures through expert reviews. As a result, a verified Learnability checklist consisting of three heuristics was selected: recognition rather than recall, user control and freedom and match between the system and the real world. For each heuristic, suitable sub-heuristics and evaluation questions were identified. Through the learnability checklist, usability experts and analysts can consistently perform their evaluation during heuristics evaluation on other mobile shopping apps. This is to ensure that the apps have all relevant features that enhance the learning ability of their users, using the apps confidently and proficiently, providing their contentment in every usage scenario.

Usability implications in software architecture: The case study of a mobile app

Usability is a highly desired but often ignored software quality. Effective user interfaces tend to increase learnability, effectiveness and user satisfaction. But usability is often neglected in the early stages of software development and is thus frequently not address in a system's architectural design. Furthermore, because usability is often neglected or deferred, it is difficult to estimate the effort specifically spent on adding or improving usability mechanisms in the software architecture and in code. In this work, we present a case study where we analyze the impact of introducing a variety of usability mechanisms to a mobile application and we report on the architectural changes that must be made in the software architecture to accommodate them. We also report on the additional code required to implement these usability mechanisms and we investigate the users' satisfaction of combining and using several usability mechanisms in a mobile application. Finally, we evaluated user responses—both positive and negatives—to these usability mechanisms via a questionnaire involving 25 users from different roles and different organizations and including contextual interviews to analyze the qualitative responses of the subjects. Our results show that apart from the relatively modest modeling and coding effort, the combination of several usability mechanisms seems beneficial for users of mobile systems and increases the satisfaction during the interaction with the system.
