Use of a surface-acoustic-wave sensor to characterize the reaction of styrene vapor with a square-planar organoplatinum complex

Abstract: A coated surface-acoustic-wave (SAW) sensor is used to probe the reaction of styrene vapor with the square-planar platinum-ethylene pi-complex, trans-PtCl2(ethylene)(pyridine). A dual-SAW delay-line oscillator configuration is employed: one oscillator is coated with a solvent-cast film of the solid platinum-ethylene complex dispersed in a poly(isobutylene) matrix, and the second oscillator is coated only with polymer.
