Are Future Nurses Ready for Digital Health?

Background: Research continues to show significant gaps in nursing graduates' preparedness in digital health. Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore nursing students' self-perceived nursing informatics competency and preparedness in digital health, describe learning opportunities available, and identify perceived learning barriers and facilitators to developing informatics competency. Methods: A sequential mixed-methods design, using a cross-sectional survey and interviews, was used. Senior undergraduate students (n = 221) in BScN programs in a Western Canadian Province participated. Results: Participants self-reported being somewhat competent in nursing informatics. Three themes were identified: struggling to make sense of informatics nursing practice; learning experiences; and preparedness for future practice. Conclusion: Addressing inconsistencies in informatics education is an urgent priority so that nursing graduates are competent upon joining the workforce. Implications for nursing education, practice, and policy are discussed.

Competency-based education presents challenges in the management of competency attainment, validation, and documentation, especially in clinical education arenas. One approach to competency management is the use of "entrustable professional activities" (EPAs), which are units of professional practice that break down competencies into tasks that students are expected to perform, to equip them to practice safely and independently. Entrustable professional activities can be complex and difficult to manage. An electronic clinical tracking system with an EPA platform provides clarity and targeted outcomes to direct both students and preceptors on what is expected during clinical education, and allows faculty to monitor student progress and facilitate the generation of outcome reports that align with internal and external requirements.

Documents are tools of communication which are changing rapidly in nature and quantity. Prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic, digital formats have become ubiquitous. However, documents and documentation have a long pre-digital history. In seeking to survey document types and features, two major online journal databases from the Web of Science database were analysed over a 30-year period to 2020. Documents were classified into types and the (arbitrary) features of format, dimension, production, administration and distribution. Such tabulation of journal documents has not been undertaken previously. As the sampled journals covered a range of fields, the types and features of documentation in selected specialised areas were included. Digitalisation of documentation, especially of rare documents, has accelerated in recent times, contributing to the retention of knowledge and its rapid dissemination, despite the accompanying disadvantages of the digital age, with its largely unregulated social media. Classifying and describing the diversity of existing documents is a major task and we have initiated this process by analysing two scientific databases.
