Gorse (Ulex europaeus) and French broom (Genista monspessulana) are two highly invasive species that have become a threat to tropical countries, especially in Andean ecosystems. This research focused on providing a physicochemical characterization and essential oils extraction of both species to better understand their potential valorization and guide further environmental management efforts. For this purpose, the following analyses were conducted for both species: higher heat value (HHV), elemental analysis, proximate analysis, thermogravimetric analysis to obtain constituent natural polymers (hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin), and extraction of essential oils and other interest chemical compounds through supercritical fluids. Ecological closeness was found between the two species mostly regarding HHV, fixed carbon, and volatile matter, which calls for similar potential uses. Both species were also found to be suitable for combustion processes, gasification, extraction of chemical compounds, and use of lignocellulosic content; however, only U. europaeus appeared suitable for activated carbon obtention. Therefore, this work provided relevant data that can be used as preliminary basis to establish strong scientifically-based management and control strategies for these two invasive species. We recommend focusing primarily on thermal processes such as pyrolysis, gasification, or combustion, and also essential oils extractions of acetic acid, dodecanoic acid, anagyrine, amylene hydrate, caulophylline, and maltol in the future.

Global problems associated with conventional, non-biodegradable plastics have urged the society to use more ecofriendly biodegradable plastics. In this study, linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) was co-compounded with cassava-based thermoplastic starch (TPS) to prepare biodegradable plastics (i.e. plastics that can be degraded by microbes), in which three different LLDPE/TPS ratios were studied. Acetic acid was used to hydrolyze the polysaccharides by breaking the branched amylopectin that causes the TPS-containing composites brittle and stiff. The biodegradation properties of the LLDPE/TPS composites were determined by observing the level of microbial growth on the sample surface after incubation with potato dextrose agar medium that was inoculated with Penicillium sp. and Aspergillus niger. Burial test in a humid composting medium was also performed to validate the biodegradation properties. The mass change (%) was calculated in relative to the initial mass before burial test. The physical properties (tensile strength and elongation at break) of the bioplastics were determined using universal testing machine before and after burial treatment. The morphology of the sample surface was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the microbial growth increases with increasing TPS content. Negative mass changes were observed on all samples that contain TPS, with increase in the magnitude with increasing TPS content. The tensile strength tends to increase in the first 28 days of burial period in a composting medium then decreases and plateaus, while the elongation at break decreases with increasing burial period. Moreover, samples that contain acetic acid showed less microbial attachment and less biodegradation compared to samples that does not contain acetic acid.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the potential of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) films treated with commercial solution of Ag nanoparticles stabilized with natural tannin and silane groups in the bacteria growth inhibition. The films were produced with commercial pulps of pine and eucalyptus treated with sodium hydroxide (5% w/v) and calcium hydroxide (10% w/v), respectively. The bacteria selected for the inhibition test were the gram-positive Listeria monocytogenes and gram-negative Salmonella enteriditis. The films performance was investigated by the antimicrobial activity using disc diffusion. In addition, the pulps were evaluated by their chemical composition, water retention index (WRI) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The content of hemicelluloses in the treated pine pulp (11.32%) was lower in comparison to the found in the treated eucalyptus pulp (14.46%). The XRD diffractogram presented higher crystallinity index for the treated eucalyptus pulp (70%) with a characteristic peak of calcium carbonate. The treated eucalyptus pulp showed higher WRI and viscosity values in relation to the treated pine pulp. Growth inhibitory halos were more expressive when the treatment with both antimicrobial solutions were proceeded in the films produced with pine CNFs with addition of the citric acid. The effect of the nanoparticles stabilized with tannin must be highlighted, mainly on the bacterium S. enteriditis.
