Use of agro-industrial residue from the canned pineapple industry for polyhydroxybutyrate production by Cupriavidus necator strain A-04

Abstract: BackgroundPineapple is the third most important tropical fruit produced worldwide, and approximately 24.8 million tons of this fruit are produced annually throughout the world, including in Thailand, which is the fourth largest pineapple producer in the world. Pineapple wastes (peel and core) are generated in a large amount equal to approximately 59.36% based on raw material. In general, the anaerobic digestion of pineapple wastes is associated with a high biochemical oxygen demand and high chemical oxygen dem… Show more

“…This region was dominated by sugars such as fructose, δ sucrose (δ 5.38), α-D-glucose (δ 5.18) and β-D-glucose (δ 4.58). Sukruansuwan and Napathorn [38] demonstrated an abundance of sugars present in pineapple peel and core that are beneficial to fermentation.…”

“…By increasing BAP (0.5 mg/l − 1 mg/l), number of mature embryos have been increased. This growth regulator plays a determining role by acting on the pro-embryogenic cells and the proliferation of embryogenic globules on the surface of calli [2]. Also, it was found the increase of the number of mature embryos by addition of NAA (0.5 mg/l) to medium with an optimal rate of initiation and maturation of embryos (88%) on Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with BAP (1 mg/l) and NAA (0.5 mg/l).…”

“…Pineapple (Ananas comosus) is one of fruit crops widely produced in the tropics and with global production around 24.8 million tons in 2017 [1]. It is the third world tropical fruit crop after banana and citrus [2]. It is a self-sterile plant, and the propagation methods widely used is from suckers [3].…”

“…For example, grape pomace obtained from juices and wine production represents 20% of the total processed grapes [123], providing various phenolic constituents such as catechins, anthocyanins, flavanol glycosides, phenolic acids, and stilbenes [98]. On the other hand, the pineapple core (an inevitable residue in its processing) is an essential fiber source [93]. However, it is an edible residue that can be used as a dietary source.…”
