Use of an amplatzer vascular plug in embolization of a pulmonary artery aneurysm in a case of hughes-stovin syndrome: a case report

Abstract: IntroductionHughes-Stovin syndrome is a rare condition characterized by peripheral deep venous thrombosis accompanied by single or multiple pulmonary arterial aneurysms. The limited number of cases has precluded controlled studies of the management of pulmonary artery aneurysms, which usually cause massive hemoptysis leading to death. This is the first report of a new endovascular treatment of a single large pulmonary arterial aneurysm.Case presentationAn 18-year-old Caucasian man was referred to our departmen… Show more

“…As opposed to surgery, interventional embolization of multifocal PAAs and pseudoaneurysms has proven to be advantageous [10]. This method of management includes the use of glue embolization, balloon embolization, stent graft placement, or the use of coils [11].…”

“… 1 Since then, this association of multiple pulmonary aneurysms and peripheral venous thrombosis has been named Hughes-Stovin syndrome 4 and several cases have been published. 2-6 There have been less than 50 published cases of HSS described in English medical literature so far. 7 It usually affects the young adult aged from 12 to 48 years and holds a strong predilection for the male gender 4 , 8 , 9 with only 6 cases describing women.…”

“…The clinical use of AVP 4 has predominantly been in the embolisation of pulmonary arteriovenous malformations and in the peripheral vasculature for treatment of aortoiliac aneurysms where it is used on its own or in conjunction with other techniques such as embolisation coils (5,9). To date, we have found one report in the literature where it has been used in conjunction with micro-coils to successfully treat PAA in a case of Hughes-Stovin syndrome (10) and a further report of a paediatric case where AVP was used on its own to treat an idiopathic PAA (8). …”
