Use of Antimigraine Treatments by General Practitioners

Abstract: Acute headache treatment prescribed by French GPs for their own migraines or those of their relatives respect practice guidelines and is considered as effective and satisfactory. Use of prophylactic medication is low and its effectiveness perceived as limited. Better use of prophylactic treatments may attenuate the impact of migraine on daily activities.

“…According to MacGregor, a significant proportion of PCPs prescribe simple analgesics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for migraine (even for severe attacks), rather than migraine-specific treatments [ 7 ]. On the other hand, in industrialized countries such as France, more than 75% of GPs prescribed triptans as part of the treatment of migraine attacks [ 24 ]. Migraine-specific treatments, triptans (2.6%) and ergotamine derivatives (4%), were less prescribed by GPs in our context because of their unavailability and their high cost.…”

“…A questionnaire study provided information on the extent to which patients accept the side effects of preventive treatment, which is consistent with the findings in the present study. 43 Another study addressed how GPs treated themselves and close relatives; 44 one study explored physicians' understanding of patients with migraine; 45 and another study reports clinical determinants of preventive therapy in primary care. 46 Implications for practice and research Appropriate prophylaxis is an important factor in the aim to improve the quality of care of patients with migraine by reducing attack frequency and duration, improving functioning and productivity, reducing use of acute medication, and preventing medication overuse.…”
